Make-Ahead Frozen Pizza: Quick, Nutritious, and Family-Favorite Meal

Pizza is a fan favorite nearly everywhere and frozen pizzas can be a lifesaver on busy days.  However, I personally don’t love the ingredients or even the cost of frozen pizzas.

In fact, I made the mistake of actually reading the ingredients on the back of a frozen pizza box one time … to say the look on my face was shock and disgust would be an understatement.

This sent me on a journey to find a customizable pizza that could be frozen now and baked later.   A homemade frozen pizza!

This recipe is just that! Not only can it be frozen now and baked later, but it can be baked the same day it is made.  Like most pizzas the toppings are customizable based on your family’s preferences, making it the perfect dish for a busy night since it is truly something everyone can love!

Nutritious: These pizzas can be made healthier than a frozen pizza you buy from the store.  Add extra meat and vegetables and avoid all the preservatives and flavor enhancers.  Not only that, but with a sourdough crust, even the grains are properly prepared and more nutritious than a store bought frozen pizza!

Tips & Tricks

Find a Dough: I use a sourdough pizza crust, but find one that fits your family’s tastes and preferences.  If you don’t use sourdough, are gluten free, or prefer cauliflower crust; find a crust that fits that style.  It might take more work to find one that freezes well, but on those late nights when you need a fast meal you won’t regret it!!

Prepare Your Ingredients: Get all of your ingredients together and lined up before you begin.  This will make assembling your pizzas much faster and easier. Brown the hamburger, shred the cheese, chop all the vegetables (peppers, mushrooms, onions, etc.) and have your sauce open and ready with a spoon.

Browning Hamburger: When you brown your hamburger, add some extra nutrition by adding in some ground liver.  Your family won’t even notice a taste difference but will reap the nutritional benefits. 

Sauté the Onion and Peppers: Over time I’ve learned that onions and peppers will still have a decent amount of crunch if they are placed on the pizza raw, which my family doesn’t care for.  To remedy this problem, I sauté these vegetables before putting them on the pizza so they are tender and soft.

Variations

This pizza recipe is for supreme style pizza, but the toppings can be added to, subtracted from, or change them completely to fit your family’s tastes and preferences. Some variations might include:

  • Pepperoni
  • Canadian Bacon and Pineapple
  • Hamburger Mushroom
  • Meat Lovers (Hamburger, Canadian Bacon, Pepperoni, etc.)
  • Breakfast Pizza (Gravy, Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Breakfast Sausage, etc)

  • Spatula or Wooden Spoon
  • Bowls (various sizes)
  • Scrapping Spatula or Spoon

  • Cardboard (Cut to size)
  • Parchment Paper
  • Tin Foil (or another form of wrapping like butcher paper)

  • Pizza Crust
  • Tomato Sauce
  • Cheese, shredded
  • Pepperoni
  • Hamburger or Sausage
  • Bell Peppers, sliced thin
  • Onion, sliced thin
  • Mushrooms, sliced thin

How To Make Homemade Frozen Pizza

Start by cutting all the cardboard to size and laying it out.  Cover each piece of cardboard with parchment paper (my favorite is If You Care) before placing your crust of choice on top. You can find my favorite sourdough pizza crust here.

Next make sure the rest of your ingredients are laid out and ready to go in bowls.  Onions, peppers, and mushrooms sliced and sautéed if desired. Hamburger and/or sausage browned. Cheese shredded.  Add seasonings to the tomato sauce if needed.  The toppings are your choice, but for this example I’ll walk you through a supreme pizza.

On each pizza crust, spread tomato sauce before sprinkling liberally with shredded cheese.  When the pizzas are warmed in the oven the cheese seems to shrink as it melts so don’t be afraid to add plenty.

Add additional toppings including hamburger, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and pepperoni. This is the part where you can load the pizza up with your favorites!

When adding the toppings, it is often most efficient to add one toppings to all the pizzas before adding the next topping rather than completely assembling one pizza at a time. This is why setting up all your ingredients ahead of time, laying out your pizza crusts, and creating an assembly style layout is ideal.

After all the pizzas are assembled, wrap each pizza for the freezer using tin foil or butcher paper. You just want to protect the pizzas from freezer burn. Pizzas can be stacked in the freezer once they are all wrapped.

When you are ready to bake a pizza simply remove it from the freezer, unwrap the tin foil or butcher paper, and bake in the oven only on the parchment paper at 375*F for 30-40 minutes or until heated through and the cheese is melted. This time might be different depending on how much you loaded up your pizza with toppings.

Pizzas are best eaten within 3 months of when they are placed in the freezer, though they can be eaten up to six months from when they are placed in the freezer.
