Skin Care and Dirty Secrets of the Beauty Industry

In the last two years, I have focused a lot on what I put in and on my body. One major way that I have been able to do that is by switching out my skin care and beauty products.

It took me a couple tries, but I have finally found a company that I really love the performance and the ingredients. I have been using Crunchi for a little over six months, and I have seen great results. While I never had any major skin issues, I did have some redness on my cheeks that has evened out since using Crunchi. I have noticed that when I forget to do my skin care routine, my redness begins to come back but a week of using Crunchi again, and the redness evens out again.

There are several reason that I love Crunchi including their commitment using clean products and clean packaging. This means that I can feel confident about what I’m putting on my skin without there being toxic or harmful chemicals absorbed through my skin. Additionally, I can feel confident that the packaging is not contributing to chemicals in our water supply and food sources when recycled properly.

My morning routine starts off with the Gentle Facial Bar, followed by the Clarilight Facial Essance to tone, and the Daylight Facial Cream to moisturize. If I will be spending a lot of time outside in the sun, I will go ahead and add Crunchi’s facial sunscreen, Sunlight Facial SPF, over the top of my moisturizer after it has dried. If I decide that I will be going out in the sun later in the day, I just come back and apply the sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going out.

In the evenings, I also use the Gentle Facial Bar and the Clarilight Facial Essence, but I also use Crunchi‘s Powerlight Eye Cream and Goldenlight Facial Serum. In the evenings, I use Crunchi’s Nightlight Facial Cream in place of the Daylight Facial Cream I use in the mornings.

When I first started to learn about clean beauty, it was alarming to me the amount of chemicals that the FDA allows to be in our products. The original act that created the Food and Drug Administration(FDA); the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act); was passed in 1938. In the FD&C Act only 11 ingredients were banned and this remained the case until 2016 when an additional 19 ingredients were banned. However, all these ingredients were used in antibacterial soap, not makeup and skincare products.

Not only are there very few ingredients banned by the FDA, but the FDA does not require that cosmetic products or ingredients be tested before they are sold to consumers. The FDA also does not have the authority to recall products even if several people have complained about the product or there are class action lawsuits against the product. Examples of such cases include lawsuits alleging hair loss, hair damage, and even scalp burns from hair products made by Monat, DevaCurl, and Wen.

Not only are the ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products not very closely regulated, but there are more than 10,000 of them! An industry-funded agency, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR), reviews these ingredients, but currently has only reviewed 13% of them. Even though these ingredients have been reviewed and some have limits set by the CIR, there is no governing body ensuring that ingredients used by cosmetic companies are used according the safety limits set by CIR.

Currently, the average American woman will put over 169 chemicals on her body each and every day. Many of these chemicals that women are applying to their bodies each day are linked to cancer, infertility, miscarriage, poor infant and maternal health outcomes, obesity, asthma, sensitization, allergic reactions, and many other serious health concerns.

When I learned about how little regulation goes into the chemicals companies are allowed to put in products we use daily, I decided I had to make changes for my health and the health of my family. One of the easiest places to start for me was with my skin care and beauty routines which is what made the switch to Crunchi so easy for me.

Crunchi’s products are third party tested for heavy metals and PFAs. Additionally, Crunchi uses organic plant extracts and oils when they can, as well sourcing ingredients from non-GMO sources. Crunchi also does not use synthetic lake dye or petroleum ingredients, and they are vegan and use eco-friendly packaging with almost no plastic. They also have a list of ingredients they have banned on their website with the reason why and sources for the information.

After seeing the dangers that can be present in cosmetics and the lengths to which Crunchi goes to protect against these dangers, it was an easy decision to give them a try. Between the safety measures that Crunchi takes and the performance I have experienced first hand, they are definitely a company I recommend to my family and friends.
