In the process of trying to find clean products for my home, I stumbled across some recipes for homemade lotion online. Overtime, I tried a handful, but couldn’t find any one recipe that I loved. So, I set out to make my own lotion recipe.
This lotion is fairly simple to make, and can be made in larger or smaller batches and stored to be used over time. You will need coconut oil, Shea butter, jojoba oil, and arrowroot powder.
One thing I’ve learned over the course of making this lotion, is that buying high-quality ingredients really does make the difference. You can make it with lower quality coconut oil, Shea butter, and jojoba oil, but this results in a lower quality lotion overall. And the quality of the ingredients can really affect the consistency of the lotion as well as how well it stays together or separate overtime.
That being said, I like to get my coconut oil from Azure Standard, organic jojoba oil, and Essential Depot Shea butter. These are the ingredients that I have found work the best for both in terms of best consistency and lack of separation over time. If you don’t like the consistency, the first time you make it, don’t simply throw the recipe away, try buying higher quality or a different brand of ingredients as they will mix together differently. While this may seem like such a simple change, it can really make or break this lotion.
To make this lotion, I simply add all of the ingredients except for the arrowroot powder to a pint jar and use a handheld mixer with only one of the beater attachments to mix until it is a whipped consistency. Once I am happy with a consistency, I add in 1 to 2 tablespoons (I use a heaping tablespoon) of arrowroot powder and mix it in with a spatula or spoon. I made the mistake the first time of mixing in the arrowroot powder of trying to use the beater attachment. This resulted in a very large, powdery mess all over both myself and my kitchen. Therefore, I strongly recommend a hand mixing in your arrow root powder to avoid the mess I created.
I’ve then simply add a plastic screw top lid to my pint jar so that it can be used on a daily basis. I have also found that old candle jars also work well. If you are using a mason jar, you can just add a regular canning lid and ring if you don’t have plastic lids. However, I have found this is more difficult as the two pieces can be harder to hold onto with lotion on your hands.
This lotion recipe does tend to be a little more greasy than standard lotion from the store. However, in both my experience and my families experience, this lotion works much better than any of the lotions we have ever bought over-the-counter. My husband sometimes suffers from eczema and this lotion seems to really help to keep that under control for him. We apply it once a day, usually right before bed so that we do not have to worry about how greasy our hands are when touching other items.
